The English Language Section

Linguistic research at our department is pursued by PhDr. Michelle Duruttya PhD., whose area of expertise is corpus linguistics and its use in the teaching of professional English, and Iryna Nedainova, PhD., who specializes in discourse analysis, currently in the context of the Ukraine conflict. Both publish in international journals and present their work at Czech and international conferences.  Recent conferences include INTED2023: 17th Annual International Conference of Education, Research and Innovation at the University of Valencia (Dr. Duruttya, 2023) and the 7th Estidia Conference Exploring Real-Life, Fictional and Virtual Dialogue at the Mikolas Römeris University in Vilnius (Dr. Nedainova, 2024).

Literary research is the domain of PhDr. Ivona Mišterová, PhD., who has long been working on adaptations of William Shakespeare's plays on Czech stages. Dr. Mišterová is the author of the monograph Inter Arma non Silent Musae, dealing with English and American dramatic works on Czech and Moravian theatre stages during the First World War, as well as many other scholarly articles and studies on Shakespearean themes. She is the investigator of the Visegrad project "Crossing Borders with Shakespeare since 1945: Central and Eastern European Roots and Routes" and a participant of many Czech and international conferences. Her field of activity also includes contemporary British literature and literary translation. She presents her work at Czech and international conferences (e.g. ESRA Conference in 2023 in Budapest) and publishes in domestic and international journals (Brno Studies in English, Theatralia, Multicultural Shakespeare and others).

PhDr. Alice Tihelková, PhD., is engaged in research of interdisciplinary character. Its focus is on British cultural studies, but it also has significant overlaps with linguistics. Using critical discourse analysis, Dr. Tihelková explores the ways in which topics such as social stratification, poverty and its associated stereotypes, the lifestyles of social classes, and the social policies of British governments are addressed in British public discourse. She presents her work at international conferences and is a regular contributor to English language journals (Brno Studies in English, American and British Studies Annual, Hradec Králové Journal of Anglophone Studies and others).

Cultural studies are also the focus of Mgr. Tomáš Hostýnek, who strives to enrich the teaching of English language and Anglo-American realia with elements of popular culture, which resonate with our students. He publishes his outputs in professional journals such as the Hradec Králové Journal of Anglophone Studies or the proceedings of the Profilingua international conference. He is also tirelessly engaged in popularization activities and organizes numerous lectures for the public.

In addition to classical philological research, our department is also active in cooperation with secondary schools. In the years 2019-2022, Ivona Mišterová and Alice Tihelková participated in the project "Specialized Foreign Language for Vocational Training in Construction and Carpentry with the Implementation of Digital Education. Builders, Let's Go!" , which produced a series of digital foreign language textbooks for secondary vocational education.
